Cycling the Pioneer Valley
Bike New England leads bicycle
tours in the Berkshires and on the North Shore, which mark the western and
northeast boundaries of Massachusetts. As you head east in Berkshire County,
you enter the "hill towns" where communities are not restricted to
settlements in the valleys like they are along the Taconic Range and Mount
Greylock area of what we often think of as "The Berkshires". Here you will
find excellent cycling and long rewarding climbs and descents in a sparsely
populated area.
East of the Hilltowns, you reach the Pioneer Valley
with flatter terrain on either side of the Connecticut River . Our three day
weekend tour is based in Amherst, home of the University of Massachusetts.
Click on the cue sheets and maps below and enjoy a relatively flat loop
along the Connecticut River, a ride through popular Northampton for a bit of
the hill towns, and the quiet roads just west of Quabbin Reservoir.
